The Past

The theatre "Ugala" staged the first puppet play in Viljandi. The play "Ant and Grasshopper" was brought on the stage my the manager of the theatre "Ugala" Enn Toona. The theatre UGALA has staged the puppet plays since the year 1948 till 1952. 14 puppet plays were staged. Two types of the dolls were used: marionettes and puppets.


The source of the present-day Viljandi Puppet Theatre goes back to the year 1955 when the producer Alice Mägi started with the play Three Piglets. During period 1956-1977 the leader of the theatre was Votele Kuusik.


Altmar Looris has been the theatre manager since 1977.
